Getting Games into School!  Games & Sims Table

Facilitators: Hap Aziz, Trish Cloud, Chris Luchs, Tanya Martin, Kae Novak and Kazuya Shida

Whether aligned with the curriculum or through after school Minecraft clubs, Coding Clubs, Game Jams, Summer Camps or Hackathons come talk to the Games & Sims Network educators about getting games into school. The table has GSN consultants that you can think of as your gaming guides. They are comprised of educators who can answer questions, show you games, game mechanics, coding curriculum and coding games. This isn’t only a one time deal; this is 2015/2016 initiative for the Games & Sims Network to include an online Minecraft conference in early 2016.

Hackathon: Hack Your Class
Chris Luchs, Associate Dean, Career Technical Education

What is a Hackathon? It’s an intensive 24-48 hour event where programmers, graphic designers, techies and geeks gather to figure out tech solutions to problems big and small. See how to bring this kind of energy and event to your classroom. Using a hackathon as a model, the educators presenting created a 24 hour, 12 hour and 8 hour hackathon. They will present on how to plan and execute your own hackathon. The students as players on a team are given a challenge and challenge rules. It brings the experience of coding and design to life for students. The difference between a hackathon and other multimedia forms is that the students are creating, editing and repurposing code as a pedagogical tool. The students are actively engaged in the experience. We have found it works equally as well as end of term class project or mid-way in the term as a way for students to bond.

Noon to 12:30 pm TBD
